Green Hydrogen Capacity Awarded to Four Refineries

The Government of India has awarded 30 Kilo Tonnes Per Annum (KTPA) of green hydrogen production capacity to four refineries under the SIGHT Mode-2B scheme of the National Green Hydrogen Mission. The initiative supports green hydrogen adoption in the refining sector and India’s clean energy objectives.

Indian Oil Corporation Limited’s Panipat refinery has been awarded 10 KTPA, while Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited’s Bina refinery and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited’s Vizag refinery have each received 5 KTPA. Numaligarh Refineries Limited has been awarded 10 KTPA, taking the total sanctioned capacity to 30 KTPA.

The projects will be implemented through Build Own Operate arrangements involving private developers, with project-specific investments by the concerned developers. The selected projects are expected to create a reliable domestic market for green hydrogen while encouraging private-sector participation in production infrastructure. By integrating green hydrogen into refinery operations, the initiative could also help reduce the carbon intensity of one of India’s major industrial sectors and accelerate the development of a domestic green hydrogen ecosystem.

According to the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, wider adoption of green hydrogen can help reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels, strengthen energy security and support India’s clean energy transition and net-zero objectives.

The information was provided by Shripad Yesso Naik in the Rajya Sabha. The projects are expected to support domestic demand and industrial decarbonisation efforts across India.
