The Problem: Power Cuts due to Vegetation & Wildlife Electrocution

The power cut/outage data of distribution companies reveals that most of the power cuts across the distribution network are caused due to vegetation growth, weather conditions that lead to the interference of vegetation/ trees with power lines and wildlife and bird electrocutions. These power cuts not only cause inconvenience to residents and businesses, but also result in significant financial losses for the power distribution company.

It is well noted that in our country any storm during rainy reason causes power supply disruptions for many hours, as the strong winds sway the trees and branches onto the overhead wires and other installations. Tragically these power cuts lead to felling and trimming of trees which involves huge costs for the power distribution companies. Further the branch-trimming exercise involves risk to human life and generation of waste.

Another example of the importance of installing bird guards can be seen in the case study of Great Indian Bustards (GIB). GIB is endemic to Indian subcontinent and its population is limited to the grasslands of Rajasthan and Gujarat. It is one of India’s four most endangered animals. According to the data, a total of seven GIBs died in 2022 alone due to electrocution. This has become a huge hinderance for government in its efforts to save the population of this species.

The Solution: Insulation Covers and Bird Guards

The solution to this prevalent problem today, is the implementation of insulation covers and bird guards on power lines and poles. Insulation covers, also known as OLCs, are designed to protect the overhead power lines from coming in contact with vegetation, birds and sometimes humans. They have been proven to be effective in reducing power cuts caused by falling trees and wildlife electrocution in many other countries where they are already installed.

Recently the Rajasthan Government, following the supreme court order, has formed a committee to suggest measures that can save Great Indian Bustard from extinction due to electrocution. The apt solution to this problem is installation of bird guards. Bird guards, are especially designed to prevent birds from coming into contact with power lines and poles, reducing the risk of electrocution. They are made from durable materials for long lasting outdoor exposure. They can be easily installed on field and also can be refit easily during regular maintenance. All these components are UV resistant and fire and flame retardant.

The implementation of insulation covers, and bird guards would bring a number of benefits for both citizens and the power distribution companies. For people, it would mean reduced power outages and shorter restoration times, as well as more greenery and fresh air in the city. It would also mean reduced risk of human life during maintenance and tree felling, as well as wildlife protection from electrocution.

For the power distribution company, the benefits would include reduced consumer complaints, more revenue without outages, reduced expenditure on branch trimming, better reputation, and an immense contribution to nature.
