Two products of GE Aerospace, High-Voltage Power Controller (HVPC) and Unidirectional Converter (UDC), have been certified as production-ready for U.S. military ground vehicles.
The High-Voltage Power Controller and Unidirectional Converter both leverage GE Aerospace’s Silicon Carbide (SiC) MOSFET, Power Overlay Packaging (POL) and module technologies, delivering best-in-class size, weight, power, and cost advantages.
Focusing on the products, Kris Shepherd, President and General Manager, Electrical Power Systems for GE Aerospace, said, “The power, temperature and thermal capabilities of these units are unmatched in the industry. With this qualification complete, these high-voltage power units are ready for production and represent a significant technology advancement in power electronics to deliver the power required for military ground vehicles.”
The technology was developed in collaboration with the U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command Ground Vehicle Systems Center (DEVCOM GVSC) and qualified at GE Aerospace facilities. These high-voltage units shift from a traditional 28-volt system to a 600-volt architecture, enabling more efficient energy conversion and battery charging while reducing weight and easing demand on the motor. This allows the motor to dedicate full power to driving the vehicle when needed.
