India and Sri Lanka Strengthen Power Sector Cooperation

India and Sri Lanka reviewed bilateral cooperation in the power sector during a meeting held in New Delhi, with discussions covering the proposed India–Sri Lanka HVDC interconnection and the Sampur Solar Power Project. The Indian delegation was led by Union Minister of Power and Housing & Urban Affairs, Manohar Lal, while Sri Lanka was represented by Minister of Ports and Civil Aviation and Minister of Energy, Anura Karunathilake.

The two sides also discussed opportunities to strengthen cross-border electricity trade, renewable energy, transmission infrastructure and capacity building. India shared its experience in transmission system development through the Tariff-Based Competitive Bidding framework.

Both countries reviewed progress under existing bilateral mechanisms and reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening cooperation in the power sector. The discussions focused on supporting sustainable development and improving regional energy security through closer coordination and implementation of ongoing initiatives.

Lal reiterated India’s commitment to the long-standing energy partnership with Sri Lanka, while Anura appreciated India’s continued support and conveyed Sri Lanka’s commitment to expanding bilateral energy cooperation.
