Repowering Work Completed at the 50-Year-Old Ogamigo Hydroelectric Power Station

J-POWER has initiated commercial operation of the Ogamigo Hydroelectric Power Station in Shokawa Village, Takayama City, Gifu Prefecture, after completing repowering work (comprehensive renovations of the main equipment, such as the water turbines and generators) that had been in progress since May 2024.

More than 50 years have passed since the power station began operating in 1971, and the equipment had aged. The repowering work completely updated the main equipment, such as the water turbines and generators. The repowering work utilized the latest analysis and design technology to improve the blade shape of the turbine runner, which increased the power output by 1,300 kW, from 20,000 kW to 21,300 kW.

In addition, J-POWER streamlined the facility to improve reliability and reduce maintenance requirements. The company has undertaken repowering work at eight power stations to date, with Ogamigo being the eighth such construction project.

Based on the J-POWER Group’s experience and track record in developing and operating hydroelectric power plants throughout Japan, the company will continue to expand renewable energy projects to achieve carbon neutrality, as stated in J-POWER BLUE MISSION 2050.

Contextually, as per the MISSION 2050, the company aims to reduce CO2 emissions by 46% in 2030, and achieve net zero CO2 emissions in its power generation business in 2050.
