A distribution Transformer does not get much attention after installation — until something goes wrong. Getting the selection and maintenance basics right from the start saves considerable time and money over that period.

What the Standards Actually Mean

When you request quotations for a distribution transformer, you will often receive offers at different price points for what appears to be the same specification. The difference usually comes down to which standard the unit is built to.

IS 1180 Part 2 mandates lower losses — achieved through better core steel and more copper — and costs more upfront. IS 2026 permits higher losses and costs less.

The gap matters because no-load losses run every hour of every day, regardless of whether the facility is in production. On a 1,000 kVA unit, that difference can work out to `1.5–2 lakh per year in electricity costs. Over the asset’s life, IS 1180 typically costs less in total.

Installation and Commissioning

A transformer that has been correctly specified and manufactured can still develop early problems if the installation is not handled carefully.

Before energisation, insulation resistance should be checked, oil levels verified after transport settling, protection settings confirmed against the actual connected load, and cooling clearances validated. These steps are straightforward but often skipped when site teams are under pressure to meet commissioning timelines.

Sloppy installation rarely causes immediate failure — it tends to shorten transformer life gradually, and the cause is difficult to trace years later when problems appear. Getting commissioning right is simply part of getting the full life out of the asset.

Annual Maintenance

Most transformer failures in service are not sudden events. They develop over time — through gradual insulation degradation, oil oxidation, loose terminations, or the early stages of an internal fault.

Structured annual maintenance — oil sampling, dissolved gas analysis, thermal checks on connections, and insulation resistance trending — catches these before they become outages. DGA in particular is a useful diagnostic: gas composition in transformer oil is a reliable indicator of what is happening inside the unit, often months before a fault becomes visible or disruptive.

The cost of annual maintenance is a small fraction of what an unplanned failure costs, both in equipment and in lost production.

Repair and Overhauling

When a transformer does fail or reaches end of life, replacement is not always the first option to consider. A unit with a sound core and intact tank can often be rewound and returned to service at 40–60% of replacement cost, with a turnaround that may be faster than sourcing a new unit for less common ratings.

Whether repair makes sense depends on the age of the unit, the condition of the core, and how urgently the facility needs it back in service. It is worth getting an assessment before placing a replacement order.
