MAN Energy to Supply Gas Engines for Three Power Plants in Southeast Asia

MAN Energy Solutions’ 20V35/ 44G gas engine…

MAN Energy Solutions will supply a total of 16 gas engines with a total capacity of 172 megawatts (MW) for two power plants in Indonesia and one in East Malaysia.

Five 20V35/44G gas engines with a total capacity of 52 megawatts (MW) are destined as GenSets for a newly built power plant in the Indonesian city of Batam. The city of 1.2 million inhabitants is located on an island directly opposite to Singapore and is an upcoming industrial and commercial centre in Southeast Asia.

Four further 20V35/44G TS GenSets with two-stage turbocharging will be installed at a power plant in Cikarang, a suburb of the Indonesian capital Jakarta, and will provide a total capacity of 50 MW. Both power plants will run on low-emission natural gas and feed electrical energy into the Indonesian power grid.

Commenting on the order, Martin Chmiela, Regional Sales Head, Power in the Asia-Pacific region, said, “We have been contributing to Indonesia’s power supply with our engines for many years and have already commissioned nine power plants on various Indonesian islands. These two new power plants will be fueled by low-emission natural gas and our proven 35/44G engines are ideally suited for reliable and efficient gas operation in a hot climate with high humidity due to their robust design.”

A total of seven 20V35/44G gas engines with a total capacity of 70 MW will drive a decentralised power plant in Sipitang located in Sabah, East Malaysia. The power plant will run on natural gas and become the sole supply of electricity to a nearshore FLNG terminal that is currently under construction and expected to be in commercial operation by year 2027.

Drawing attention on the requirement of decentralised energy supply Chmiela said, “In the decentralised energy supply of industrial plants such as this FLNG terminal, spontaneous load changes and the associated flexibility in the energy supply are among the biggest challenges. Our 35/44G gas engines are the right choice for this task.”
