Ratan Tata’s Focus on Harnessing Renewable Energy

It is a great shock for our nation that on October 9, we have lost one of our all-time great visionary industrialists – Padma Vibhushan Sir Ratan Tata. He was not only a business tycoon but also a noble personality.

Ratan Ji, the Chairman Emeritus, Tata Sons, joined Tata group as an assistant in Tata Industries in the year 1962. On March 25, 1991, he became the Chairman of Tata Sons and Tata Trusts. He was instrumental in transforming a $5-billion-revenue Tata Group into a $100-billion global conglomerate creating active presence in 100 countries.

As far as the Indian power sector is concerned, Tata Group has been playing a big role in its growth and transformation. The group has a long history of harnessing clean power. More than a century ago, Jamsetji Tata decided to generate hydro-power from Roha creek. His sons completed the project, which is still functional in Maharashtra.

In 2000, Andhra Valley Power Supply Co., and Tata Hydro-Electric Power Supply Company merged into Tata Power to create India’s biggest power utility in the private sector. However, following the current trends (technological, commercial, ecological…) Ratan Ji decided to transform Tata’s whole thermal portfolio to renewable energy, so, Tata Power is now stringently focusing on expanding its solar and wind business – side by side it will slowly increase its hydroelectric power capacity.

Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited (TPREL), a subsidiary of Tata Power Company, has recently received the Letter of Award (LoA) from the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) for setting up a 400 MW Wind-Solar hybrid project. This will be the largest renewable energy project in Maharashtra till date for TPREL. ‘Hope the trait continues…
